Troubleshooting

General operation

The Simdex Future Pipeline Projects Worldwide Guide (SFPPWG) is designed to operate with the Internet:

- the first data update (information on future pipeline projects) as well as subsequent updates are obtained over the Internet

- registration with Simdex Publishing to receive future updates is performed by email

- information on new data update releases is sent by email

The SFPPWG is therefore designed to operate on a computer having an Internet access and an email address.

Configuration requirements

The 'Simdex Future Pipeline Projects Worldwide Guide' (SFPPWG) is designed for computers running Windows 98, Me, NT4, 2000 and XP.

For Windows 98, Me, NT4, it is highly recommended that Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher be installed (Internet Explorer updates certain parts of these Windows systems).

For Windows NT4, 2000 and XP, the user installing the software must have "administrator" status.

For Windows NT4, "Service Pack" 6 or higher must be installed.

The SFPPWG does not operate with Macintosh or Linux systems.

The minimum recommended requirements to use the SFPPWG are a PC Pentium II 300 MHz.

Install the program

Installation on a PC connected to the office network

If your PC is connected to the office network and the installation of software programs on your PC
is restricted (which is commun practice), you will need the assistance of a person of the IT department
to install the software.

If the program is not installed properly, it will not function properly.
To be properly installed, the programs requires to be installed with "full (administrative) rights".
A PC user with "full (administrative) rights or privileges" has full ability to install and uninstall programs on the PC.
If you do not have full (administrative) rights on your PC, which is commun practice in a office network with security rules, you need to ask the assistance of a person of the IT department.

To install the program, the IT manager must:
  - log on the PC as Administrator
  - install the program

  - give full (administrative) rights to the user on the "Simdex FPPWG" folder in the Windows "Program Files" directory

All the software and data files of the program are installed in the "Simdex FPPWG" folder in the Windows "Program Files" directory.

If you do not have "full (admninistrative) rights" on the "Simdex FPPWG" folder of your PC, you will have problems to run future data updates because the data update process modifies the data file of the "Simdex FPPWG" folder.

Install the program

The Simdex Future Pipeline Projects Worldwide Guide (SFPPWG) program must be installed before it can be used.
Once the SFPPWG is installed on the computer, it will not be necessary to repeat this setup again.

1. Before starting, close all other applications in progress so as not to disrupt the setup.

2. Insert the CDRom into the CD drive.

3. Open the CDRom window if this window does not open automatically

(to open the CDRom window, double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop then double-click the CDRom icon), then double click the "Setup" icon.

4. The install program is then run. The setup program may ask you to restart the computer at the start of setup. In this case, follow the instructions given.

Error messages may appear during installation. These messages have no impact on the setup nor on the functioning of the CDRom. When the error message appear, it is important to click the right option of the error message:

. if the options of the error message are OK and Cancel, click OK.

. if the options of the error message are Abort, Retry and Ignore, click Ignore.

6. On completion of the setup, turn off then restart the computer as indicated so as to be able to use the SFPPWG.

The program only needs to be setup once. Do not re-intall the program if the program is already installed.

When you insert the SFPPWG CDRom in the PC drive, the Windows CDRom window with the "setup" icon may open automatically. If this Windows CDRom window with the "setup" icon opens, do not click on the "setup" icon (this will launch a new setup and could create problems). Simply close the Windows CDRom window.

Program day-to-day use

(the program is already installed on your computer)

The CDRom can only operate if the CDRom is in the CDRom drive.

When you insert the SFPPWG CDRom in the drive, the Windows CDRom window with the "setup" icon opens.
In this case:
- close this window ; do not click on the "setup" icon in the Windows CDRom window, which would start a second setup of the program.

Internet data updates

To run data updates, your computer must be connected to the Internet.

Data update on a PC connected to the office network

If your PC is connected to the office network and has security restrictions (like installation of software), it is important that the software has been properly installed.
Please check the
Installation on a PC connected to the office network

If the program has not been properly installed, the data update may not function.

All the software and data files of the program are installed in the "Simdex FPPWG" folder of the Windows "Program Files" directory.

If you do not have "full (admninistrative) rights" on the "Simdex FPPWG" folder of your PC (ability to modify the files of this folder), you will have problems to run data updates because the data update process precisely modifies the data file in the "Simdex FPPWG" folder. In this case the data update simply does not function and may generate an error message.

If you run into this problem, ask the assistance of the IT manager or department and require to have "full (admninistrative) rights" on the "Simdex FPPWG" folder of the Windows "Program Files" directory of the PC.

The SFPPWG CDRom does not have to be in the drive to run the update.

First data update procedure

A first data update is required for the 'Simdex Future Pipeline Projects Worldwide Guide' (SFPPWG) to operate. The SFPPWG cannot operate without this first data update.

Data updates procedure

Users will receive email messages indicating that a new data update is available (at the address used or indicated during the registration).

Data update problem

Your PC is connected to the office network and it is not possible to run the data update correctly.

Please check data update on a PC connected to the office network.

You have installed the SFPPWG program and run the first internet data update, but when you start the SFPPWG, the program continues to ask you to run the first internet data update.

The most likely reason to explain this is that the data update file was not copied into the right folder, ie the folder of the SFPPWG program.
It is possible to check this quite rapidly:
- double click on the "my computer" desktop icon
- double click on the "main" disk of your computer (usually the "C" disk)
- open the program files folder
- search in this folder for the "Simdex FPPWG" folder, then open this folder
- check if a file named "FPProjects" (or "FPProjects.mdb") is listed.
If the "FPProjects" file is not listed, this explains the problem.

If you have this problem, please follow the "help request" procedure indicated above.

Troubleshooting

1. Help request

If you encounter a problem with the SFPPWG, please send an email to info@simdex.com where you indicate:
- the problem encountered

- the type of Windows system (XP, 2000, etc)
- the language of this Windows system (english, etc)
- if the computer is a desktop or a laptop
- if the computer is independant or in a network
- if the system configuration is "usual" (one disk or disk "C" is the main disk of the computer) or different

If there is a specific error message, please do a "screen capture" (image) of this error message and attach the (Word) document to the email. It is extremely useful to have a screen capture of the error message to find rapidly a solution.

You can also contact by phone Simdex Publishing - Olivier Letac  (Product Manager) - tel. ++ (33) 13956 8700 but it is highly recommended to send an email before.

To do a "screen capture" (image) of the error message:
- when the error message appears, press on the "Print Screen" key that is at the top right of the keyboard
(this will copy a picture of the computer screen into the Windows memory)
- open a new Word document, click inside the Word document
- type "ctrl + V" or right click + "paste" to copy the screen image into the Word document
- the image of the screen should appear in the Word document
- close and save the Word document
- attach the Word document to the email.

2. Problems encountered

Setup / installation of the SFPPWG program

If you encounter a problem in the setup of the SFPPWG, please follow the "help request" procedure indicated above.

The SFPPWG program has worked but has stopped functionning

If the SFPPWG has worked but has stopped functioning (and only in this case), you are recommended to run a repair.
If you encounter a problem right from the first use, the "repair" procedure is not recommended and will not solve the problem.

To run a repair, insert the CDRom into the drive, open the CDRom window and double click "setup". Click "Repair" in the "Simdex Future Pipeline Projects Worldwide Guide Setup" window then follow the instructions. If this repair does not enable normal operation of the CDRom you are recommended to uninstall then reinstall the CDRom.
